Furious Vladimir Putin accused David Cameron of leaping to conclusions by announcing that the Russian Airbus was brought down by a terrorist bomb
In a tense 10-minute phone call, the Russian President told Mr Cameron that all countries should wait for the outcome of the investigation into the disaster in Eqypt which killed 224 people on Saturday.
Downing Street hit back, insisting the Prime Minister’s top priority is ‘the safety of British citizens’ even if that means upsetting other world leaders.
Mr Cameron has faced a backlash from both Russia and Egypt over his claim that it is ‘more likely than not’ that a bomb downed the passenger plane over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
By contrast US President Barack Obama has said it will take a ‘lot of time’ before he can make ‘definitive pronouncements’ about what caused the crash, noting only that a bomb is ‘certainly possible’.
