South African security operatives have detained a 15-year-old girl allegedly traveling to join the Islamic State.
The teenager was stopped at Cape Town airport after evidence surfaced that she had been in contact with ISIS recruiters
This is the country’s first known arrest linked to the terrorist group, and already the ministry has stated that it is investigating whether ISIS has a recruitment network in South Africa.
State Security Minister, David Malabo said, “We can confirm that she was planning to leave the country with the intention of joining ISIS, and has been actively engaged with social media network.”
Thousands of teenage girls have been wooed by ISIS, most notably British citizens, though the terrorist group has recruited members from more than 80 countries.
