A full moon will rise on Christmas Day this year - the first time it will appear on December 25 in 38 years.

According to Fred Espenak, an eclipse and moon expert with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the event will happen at 6.11am on December 25.

That will give Santa Claus and his reindeer plenty of light to guide them while giving out presents.

December’s full moon, which is the final one for 2015, is also know as the Full Cold Moon and the Moon before Yule.

The event will cap-off a year of unusual lunar activity including a total solar eclipse in March which many were not able to see properly in the UK due to cloud.

There was also a blood moon on September 28 - created when the moon passes into the earth’s shadow, creating a reddish tinge.

The event spread fear among fringe Christian groups, fearing the end was nigh , but fears of the Apocalypse proved unfounded.
