With the various backlashes and insults that have emanated from Ghanaian acts over the 15 nominations for “Beasts of No Nation” in the Ghana Movie Awards that would be holding tonight at Accra International Conference Center, one would wonder if it is in the spirit of inferiority, hatred or patriotism.
The likes of Juliet Ibrahim, Yvonne Nelson, Yvonne Okoro, Prince David Osei and some other Ghanaian acts have condemned the organisers of the award for denigrating Gollywood. In their opinions, the organisers have done nothng with the action but to relegate Ghanaian identity and elevate Hollywood.
According to Juliet Ibrahim, the organisers’ intention is to have Idris Elba attend their event, so the nominations ought to be a form of attraction for him. Idris Osei questions the integrity of the organisers by alluding to his movie, Thedead, a low budget Hollwood movie which was produced in 2012. According to him, the organisers rejected the submission of the movie for award consideration, even when it was produced by a Ghanaian.
If we are to look at it from Osei’s argument, it means the argument of Fred Nuamah, the founder of the award does not hold, when he argued that the movie qualifies for nominations because it was co-produced by a Ghanaian, Daniel Damah. In addition, do we say the Ghanaian ownership could be made credible by the location of the movie, which is Ghana, and majority of the actors who are Ghanaians, like the young, amazing, lead actor, Abraham Attah and David Dontoh?
Whatever reason made Ghana Movie Awards nominate the movie in 15 categories is not finding any place in the hearts of Ghanaian actors and actresses. Though Osei is nominated in the Best Actor Category for “Last Night”, but he argues in his open letter to the CEO of the award, Nuamah, that such action would further kill Ghana movie industry.
Check out an excerpt of his letter below:
What do you think guys, is it wrong for “Beasts of No Nation” to have been considered a Ghanaian movie, even when it was written, shot and directed by an American, Cary Fukunaga??? Let the organisers learn from you….
