Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has banned female genital mutilation, stating that the practice is out-dated and not in line with the requirement of Islam.
Communication minister Sherrif Bojang made it known through a social media post, stating : “Female genital mutilation (FGM) has been banned with immediate effect.”
Female Genital Mutilation popularly called, Female circumcision or female genital cutting is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as: “a range of procedures which involve “the partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia”.
According to the WHO records, more than 125 million women worldwide have undergone this inhumane practice. FMG act had recorded serious health problems, including infections, bleeding, infertility, complications in childbirth, and impairs sexual pleasure.
The president emphasised that the practice was not in line with the Islamic religion and as such be banished to the past. He, however, gave a note of warning to parents and village authorities in Gambia to immediately stop performing the procedure on girls or face sanctions.
It will be recalled that Nigerian former president Goodluck Jonathan took the historic step of banning female genital mutilation in Nigeria.
