A sickening practice in India is becoming a tool for destruction of female lives as incidents of dowry deaths skyrocket in the country. This critical analysis shows the dangers associated with the barbaric practice.
Indian brides

It is still common in many parts of India for a husband to seek a dowry from the wife's family which has paved way for the increased dowry deaths recorded in India today.

Dowry death has claimed the lives of many women who are not able to meet the prices placed on them by their greedy husbands and in-laws. Dowry deaths happen when wives are murdered or driven to suicide by continuous harassment and torture by husbands and in-laws in an effort to extort an increased dowry.

India has the highest reported case of dowry death , In 2010, there were 8391 reported cases of dowry death in the country. This atrocious act accounts for deaths of many women in India today.

Most women have been forced to commit suicide by hanging, poisoning or by fire because of torturous demands of dowry from thier husbands and in-laws. Some are forced to die by setting themselves on fire when the heat becomes too much to bear - this is known as bride burning.

India has by far the highest number of dowry related deaths in the world, according to Indian National Crime Record Bureau. In 2012, 8,233 dowry death cases were reported across India. This means a bride was burned every 90 minutes, or dowry issues cause 1.4 deaths per year per 100,000 women in India. For contextual reference, the United Nations reports a worldwide average female homicide rate of 3.6 per 100,000 women, and an average of 1.6 homicides per 100,000 women for Northern Europe in 2012. Although India's dowry death rate per 100,000 is lower than equivalent rate for Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is a significant social issue in India.

According to a 1996 report by Indian police, every year it receives over 2,500 reports of bride-burning. The Indian National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports that there were about 8331 dowry death cases registered in India in 2011. Incidents of dowry deaths during the year 2008 (8172) have increased by 14.4 per cent over 1998 level (7146), while India's population grew at 17.6% over the 10-year period. The accuracy of these figures have received a great deal of scrutiny from critics who believe dowry deaths are consistently under-reported.

Dowry deaths in India is not limited to Hindus or any specific religion. The ratio of dowry deaths are about the same as the ratio of population in India by religions. Dowry death is barbaric and a practice that must be stopped because of the danger it has caused many lives. This practice degrades women and forces them into unspeakable acts. The lives and rights of every woman must be protected no matter where they are.
