A soldier has been jailed for six years for the attempted rape of an unconscious, drunk man, according to the Mirror.

Michael Nobbs, 24, admitted carrying out the serious sexual offence in Chatham, Kent, in the early hours of October 2 this year. He was caught on camera removing his trousers and attempting to rape the unconscious male victim, a court heard.

CCTV operators immediately alerted the police and Nobbs, of Chester Road in Queensferry, Deeside, Flintshire, was arrested at the scene. The victim was completely unaware that the incident had taken place until he was notified by a police officer, reports the Daily Post .

Kent Police said the assistance from Medway CCTV was vital in securing the arrest. Nobbs appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday where he was sentenced to six years in prison, having previously pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted rape on a man aged 16 or over.

His name will appear on the sex offenders' register indefinitely, the judge ruled.

An Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "All those who are found to fall short of the Army's standards or who are found to have committed an offence under either civil law or the Armed Forces Act are dealt with administratively, up to and including dismissal or through the disciplinary process, as applicable.

"Those that receive a custodial sentence can expect their service within the Armed Forces to be terminated."
