A Islamic military alliance composed of 34 Muslim nations led by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been formed with a mission to combat terrorism.
Saudi Arabia announced the formation of the Islamic military alliance through a joint statement published by Saudi Press Agency on December 15, 2015.
The statement said terrorism and its atrocities constitute serious violation of human rights and dignity and that acts of corruption and terrorism cannot be justified in any way; hence it should be fought by all means and collaboration should be made to eliminate it.
It added the newly-formed Islamic military alliance has “a duty to protect the Islamic nation from the evils of all terrorist groups and organizations whatever their sect and name which wreak death and corruption on earth and aim to terrorize the innocent.”
The countries forming the alliance along with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are: Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Yemen, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Somalia, Gabon, Guinea, Palestine, Comoros, Qatar, Cote d’Ivoire, Turkey, Chad, Togo, Tunisia, Djibouti, Senegal, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Maldives, Mali and Malaysia.
The group’s joint operations center will be based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, to coordinate and support military operations to fight all kinds of terrorism.
Saudi Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman said the alliance will confront not only the ISIS but “any terrorist organization that appears in front of us.”
More than 10 other Islamic countries, including Indonesia, expressed their support to the alliance.
Iran, Saudi Arabia’s arch-rival for influence in the Arab world, is not participating in the alliance.
