Pictured above is a man who has been beaten to death by an angry mob in northern India after rumours circulated that he and his family had eaten beef.
Mohammad Akhlaq, 50, was kicked and beaten with stones by a group of men in Uttar Pradesh state on Monday night.
Cows are seen as sacred in Hinduism and with 80 per cent of the Indian population being Hindu, the slaughter of the animal is a sensitive issue.
Mr Akhlaq's 22-year-old son was also seriously injured in the vigilante attack and is being treated in hospital. Police said six people have now been arrested in connection with the incident.
