US Republican Party’s presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has once again caused a stir by expressing his beliefs that the world would be a better place if Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein still ruled over their countries.
Donald Trump has a way with words that complements his personality and hairpiece: over-the-top, crass and rather hard to take seriously. Yet that’s the strange thing; despite all his corrosive statements about his intentions for his country’s immigration policies and his feelings about President Barack Obama, he’s become the Republican Party’s strongest general election candidate.
It is with all this in mind that we were surprised when, in a CNN interview, he reckoned that Libya, Iraq and – by extension – the world would be better places had Col. Muammar al-Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein not been ousted from their positions of power.
“I mean, look at Libya. Look at Iraq. Iraq used to be no terrorists. He (Hussein) would kill the terrorists immediately, which is like now it’s the Harvard of terrorism,” Trump said. “If you look at Iraq from years ago, I’m not saying he was a nice guy, he was a horrible guy, but it was a lot better than it is right now. Right now, Iraq is a training ground for terrorists. Right now Libya, nobody even knows Libya, frankly there is no Iraq and there is no Libya. It’s all broken up. They have no control. Nobody knows what’s going on.”
When asked what he thinks about the human rights abuses that transpired under the rule of the controversial leaders, he contended that those abuses were not as bad as the horrors that are happening there right now.
Pretty sensible reasoning for a guy who claimed, according to Kenya’s Politica platform, that “Africans are only good at eating, lovemaking and stealing”.
