A 15 year old girl died when she set herself on fire in a garden 'den' after her boyfriend broke up with her, an inquest today heard. Rebecca Berry, known as Rebe, sent her ex-partner a string of desperate social media messages, saying she had decided to kill herself, after he ended their seven-month relationship.
In a final text to her ex-boyfriend, sent at 6.58pm, Rebe wrote: "I just want to say I love you for the last time, so bye."
But the boy - who cannot be named for legal reasons - did not take her threats seriously because she had made them before, the inquest in Bournemouth heard.
Later that day setting herself alight in a den she had turned into a shrine for her dead kitten in her family's garden in Edmondsham, East Dorset. She was found dead at the scene with burn injuries by her adoptive mother, Gill Scott-Taylor.
Today, Dorset coroner Sheriff Payne recorded a narrative verdict over Rebe's death, saying he believed the teenager's actions last December had been a cry for help rather than a suicide.
"She died as a result of self immolation but there is doubt as to whether she intended her actions to result in her death," Mr Payne said.
"It is sad for anyone to die in this manner, let alone a young girl with so much ahead of her.
"I really don't think at the end of the day that she had thought this through."
Rebe, who was a Year 10 pupil at Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, Dorset, had been in a relationship the youth for around seven months.
