Sergio Ramos has reached an agreement on a new contract with Real Madrid that will keep him at the club until June 30, 2020, Spanish daily Marca reports.
Ramos had been a target for Manchester United, who were reported to be demanding the Spain international in return as part of any deal which would see goalkeeper David De Gea move to the Bernabeu.
But now the 29-year-old appears to have ended speculation over his future by signing a new five-year deal with Rafa Benitez’s side.
“The agreement between the club and the player is already reached and will be made official before the start of La Liga season [Aug. 23],” the report said.
Ramos met with Real president Florentino Perez on Sunday to sort out his future, with Marca then reporting that the two sides were close to a deal.
He started in Monday’s 3-0 triumph over Inter Milan in Guangzhou, China, and was expected to extend his contract with Real beyond his current deal, which expires in June 2017.
When asked about Ramos’ meeting with Perez, Benitez said after the game: “I spoke to the president during Sunday’s lunch and he told me that he was going to talk with Ramos.”
Marca reported that the two sides were at a stalemate but the deal was brokered in China during Sunday’s meeting with Florentino Perez, the player, his brother and agent, Rene Ramos, and club general director Jose Angel Sanchez.
According to Marca, he will receive just under €9 million per season plus bonuses.
Ramos has won the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain plus the Champions League and three La Liga titles with Real.
