Jesus Aceves, nicknamed ‘Wolf Man’ because of black fur covering his face, whose story daily mail covered a year
ago now tells how his relatives are trying to survive in the hostile environment of their little town Loreto in north-west Mexico.
The entire family of 30 are living in constant bullying and discrimantion from their neighbours because of their hairy appearance. Locals call them ‘satanic beasts’, cross themselves when they walk past, tell them to ‘go live in the woods’ and even slay their pets to make them leave.
The youngest generation of the family refuse to have their own kids in future as they fear the same discrimination and bullying they had already experienced by themselves. And while the women and children are trying to stay at home as long as possible, the men in the family have to work.
Almost all of them work in circuses and freak-shows as they can’t find normal jobs. As a result they spend most of their lives touring and away from home. And although the family has kept a sense of pride in their uniqueness, they don’t have friends, stable jobs or strong relationships , that’s why they always stick together because no one else will accept them.
Congenital Hypertrichosis is a genetic mutation, which causes an abnormal amount of hair growth across the body. The mutation is believed to be an atavism – an evolutionary throwback to genetic ancestors whose characteristics lie dormant in all humans but which come to the fore by chance in a new generation. There is no cure for any congenital forms of hypertrichosis.
