As part of a campaign to stamp out sexism in football, the BBC last night broacast some pretty shocking clips of Manchestet United, Manchester City and Arsenal fans chanting obscenities at Chelsea’s team doctor Eva Carneiro.
(Man City are not named in the title as they do not actually feature in this Youtube clip.)
Both Manchester clubs fans are heard chanting ‘Get your t**s out for the lads’, while one man shouts ‘Show us where you p**s from, you s**g, show us your m***e.”
The Arsenal fans are then heard chanting ‘Have you ever had a Gooner up your a**e’ at Carneiro, who was in earshot of both incidents and surely heard the sick chants.
Other women who have spoken of the abuse they’ve received are West Ham v ice-chairman Karen Brady and assistant referee Helen Byrne, while lineswoman Sian Massey was infamously ridiculed by Richard Keys and Andy Grey back in 2011 for having the temerity to officiate a football match.
A Twitter hashtag, #shebelongs, has been launched today to raise awareness of the sexist abuse women are being subjected to in the game, and the month-long campaign will hopefully make great strides in stamping out such abuse altogether.
