Former Milwaukee police officer Christopher Manney will not be charged for fatally shooting 31-year-old mentally ill Dontre Hamilton in a park back on April 30th.  According to Manney’s recollection of what happened, he encountered Hamilton while responding to a welfare check on him as he was seen sleeping in a downtown park.  Manney claims that Hamilton began resisting him while Manney attempted to frisk him, which resulted in the two men exchanging punches with one another.
Prior to the shooting, Hamilton allegedly took Manney’s baton and struck him in his neck with the blunt object which prompted Manney to unholster his weapon and unleash a barrage of bullets at Hamilton.  Manney hit Hamilton 14 times, killing him.  Hamilton’s family has acknowledged that he suffered from schizophrenia and stopped taking his medication shortly before the shooting.
Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm explained in an email statement exactly why former Officer Manney will not face charges for the shooting.
“This was a tragic incident for the Hamilton family and for the community,” the email read. “But, based on all the evidence and analysis presented in this report, I come to the conclusion that Officer Manney’s use of force in this incident was justified self-defense and that defense cannot be reasonably overcome to establish a basis to charge Officer Manney with a crime.”
Despite not being charged, Manney was fired as a result of the shooting.
