She bought a ticket to
attend the match between Riyadh-based Al-Shabab and Jeddah’s Al-Etihad
teams online and bypassed security – covering her hair and wearing men’s
clothing, including a baseball cap and hoodie, according to Saudi
newspaper Sabq.
Footage posted on YouTube appears to show the woman sitting alone in the away stands of Jeddah’s Al-Jawhara stadium.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the woman had been seen by security guards during the match and that her details had been “forwarded to the appropriate authorities”. It is unknown whether charges will be brought against her.
In Saudi, football stadiums are men-only. Although this ban was recently lifted to allow foreign women to attend the Asian Champions League.
The YouTube footage of the Saudi woman has been widely shared by social media users. Many commenters underneath the video have written to express their shock at the events. But others have said that she should be “imprisoned for a long time”.
Saudi Arabia is also the only nation in the world that doesn’t allow women to drive. This latest arrest comes as 25-year-old Loujain-Al-Hathloul had her detention in custody extended by 25 days, for driving her car in defiance of the ban. The case has gathered worldwide attention and many fear the authorities intend to make and example of her.
The incident also follows the arrest and release on bail of 25-year-old Ghoncheh Ghavemi in Iran, while watching a volleyball match. She stands accused of “propagating against the ruling system”
