It is understood he had been battling depression for some time, the Manchester Evening News reports .
“They decided to do qualifications teaching English with a view to going off to India, then planned to move on to Indonesia and teach.
"They planned to be away for at least two to three years. It’s really tragic to lose two young people.”
Mr Pike said James was an ‘incredibly clever and intense guy’, but had ‘no clear sense of direction’.
He added: “James’ mum attributes the fact that he pulled himself together and got a top-class degree, to his relationship with Alex. I really liked the guy.
"He had a burning sense of social injustice and was concerned about political and environmental issues. He struck me as a student of the 1960s, he was passionate.
“James talked quite openly about some of the problems he had had in his life. It had taken him a while to get himself sorted.
"He had a continuing battle with depression and that was the reason he was on medication.”
Alexandra’s mother, Anna-Louise, was too upset to talk.
